Cashola

Ca$hola is one of the games offered by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), best known for Powerball. Ca$hola is the only multi-state video lottery game in the United States. It began in 2006.

Ca$hola is played on linked machines at nine locations; three in Delaware, two in Rhode Island and four in West Virginia. The minimum jackpot is $250,000; it is paid in 30 annual payments; winners can select the cash option within 60 days of winning. The jackpot exceeded $4 million (annuity) for the first time on November 4, 2009. The first 27 jackpot winners (unlike traditional lottery jackpot games, the grand prize cannot be split, as each Ca$hola machine is independent), as of February 2, 2009, all chose the cash option, including the June 15, 2007 winner of the game's largest prize of more than $3.7 million. As of November 4, 2009, there have been 31 jackpot winners.

To win the jackpot, the maximum amount of $2.25 must be wagered for that spin. The themes for the Ca$hola slots vary by machine (e.g. Kingdom of Pharoahs, The Big Easy.) Even the minimum denomination differs (there are penny, nickel, and quarter Ca$hola machines.)

Depending on the venue, the minimum age to play Ca$hola is either 18 or 21.

In March 2009, it was revealed that Mega Millions and MUSL (which operates the U.S. Powerball game) were seeking an agreement to allow sales of both games (currently each U.S. lottery can offer one or the other) in each of the 45 jurisdictions (43 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands) that have legalized lottery sales. The agreement was finalized on October 13, 2009. The 12 current members of Mega Millions would become part of MUSL, and therefore become eligible to offer its other games, including Ca$hola.
